Climate targets and deadlines
Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) is a key driver in the Covenant of Mayors. Under the Climate&Energy Plan 2030, the organisation carries out actions to promote a process of transition towards a decentralised energy model based on renewable and sustainable energy with an integrated approach.
For 2050, Spain’s objective is to achieve climate neutrality by reducing at least 90% of the total gross GHG emissions, in full coherence with the objectives of the European Union. Also, achieve a 100% renewable electricity system by 2050.
The supramunicipal vision of AMB is key to the implementation of pilot experiences, with a high potential for replicability among its 36 municipalities, which is conducted through the Metropolitan Board for a New Energy Model, a forum that gathers all the stakeholders of the territory helping to accelerate energy transition all across the metropolitan municipalities.
Goals and challenges for buildings along the road
With over 3,000 buildings and yearly energy cost of over €45 million operational costs keep increasing. The focus for the coming decade will lie on schools which have a poor comfort level. Public consumption is to be carbon neutral by 2030 in a group of 36 cities which would be open for joint procurement.
How procuRE slots into this story and how it might help to achieve above
Climate goals are as urgent as apparently tough to reach. Having an example implemented as the procuRE project encourages citizens but also the rest of the metropolitan municipalities that will be willing to have a procuRE building also in their towns!
